Eco friendly disposable straw alternatives

Reusable straws are a washable and long lasting alternative to disposable straws.

500 million straws are used in the US alone every single day. To get the bigger picture 500 million straws could fill over 127 school buses each day, or more than 46,400 school buses every year!

This affects the environment greatly as a plastic straws take at least 200 years to decompose. This means that every straw that has ever been used is still on this earth! Most of these straws end up in the ocean as the ocean covers more than 70% of the earth. It is estimated that approximately 8.3 billion straws are in the ocean right now. Although, this isn't a good thing as over 1 million sea creatures are dying due to the amount plastic straws in the ocean each year! Sea animals (essipically turtles) have been mistaking plastic straws for food which then causes them to digest it and become extremely sick as it can prevent food digestion and can lead to a very slow and painful death.

Ways you can help solve this issue and save the sea animals is by buying reusable straws. Reusable straws are an eco friendly alternative and do not contribute to environmental pollution as the can be recycled. Reusable straws come in many materials bamboo and metal are the most popular options. Bamboo straws are disposable. Although, unlike the plastic straws are biodegradable and decopompstable. This means that when thrown away the straw will break down and can be turned into compost. So once done you can put the straws in your compost pile!
